St Finbarr’s Inaugural Literature Festival was held on Monday 3rd September . It proved to be a huge success with five authors appearing over the course of the morning. Australian Children’s Laureate Morris Glietzman, inspired our students with his engaging style and funny anecdotes . ABC radio and Craig Zonka interviewed Morris Gleitzman on the morning where he gave our #Litfest 2018 a shout out . Chanel 9 also reported on our Inaugural Literature festival as part of a story on encouraging children to read.
Among other topics, Morris Glietzman spoke about his latest novel, “Help Around the House” set in Parliament House. Our year six students are keen to read it with their Canberra trip coming up in the next month.
After morning tea, Morris Glietzman was joined by the former St Finbarr’s Primary student and parent Michael Gerard Bauer. Michael's latest book “Rodney Loses it!”, about a rabbit who loses his favourite pen, has just won the Children's Book Council of Australia , Early Childhood Book of the Year. Michael ran a workshop with our Prep and Year 1 students where they were up and out of their seats acting out parts of his latest book.
Christine Bongers, Sheryl Gwyther and Josie Montano also ran workshops for our Year 2 to 6 students about the writing and editing process. The children were enthralled to hear where authors get their ideas from and how these come together in multiple drafts through to the final publication. The students were truly inspired by these workshops and were keen to get writing straight away.
Christine Bongers summed up the mood of the day on her blog post below,
