NAPLAN

NAPLAN at St Finbarr’s School

At St Finbarr’s School, we value a balanced and informed approach to assessment that supports every child’s learning and growth.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3 and 5and provides one source of information about student achievement in reading, writing, spelling, grammarand punctuation, and numeracy. NAPLAN is part of a broader assessment picture and complements the rich, ongoing classroom assessments used by teachers throughout the year.

Supporting student learning

NAPLAN results are used alongside classroom observations, work samples and school‑based assessments to:

  • identify strengths and areas for growth in student learning
  • inform teaching and learning programs
  • support targeted instruction and intervention
  • monitor progress over time at an individual, cohort and whole‑school level

Importantly, NAPLAN does not replace teacher judgement. Classroom teachers continue to have the deepest understanding of each child’s learning journey.

Preparing students

The best preparation for NAPLAN is everyday classroom learning. Teaching and learning at St Finbarr’s is aligned with the Australian Curriculum (Version 9.0), and NAPLAN assessments reflect the skills and understandings students develop through regular classroom experiences. Students are supported to approach NAPLAN with confidence in a calm and supportive environment.

Information for parents and carers

We are committed to keeping families informed. Parent and carer information about NAPLAN, including key dates, test formats and how results are reported, is shared through school communications and made available via the school and ACARA websites.
